Feeling at Home with Oil Heat
It can take months to feel comfortable in a new home. We're here to help the system behind the comfort — your oil heating system — feel familiar, safe, and reliable.
Solid Service Since 1919
Dear Neighbor,
Welcome to your new home.
There is a lot to learn in the first stretch after moving in. Some of it is easy and familiar. You find the drawer that makes sense for the keys. You learn which rooms get the best morning light. You figure out which door everyone actually uses.
Then there are the quieter parts of the house — the systems you may not think about until you need them.
If this is your first home heated with oil, you may have a few questions.
How often does the tank need to be filled? What does the gauge mean? Should you be watching it yourself? Who do you call if the heat stops working? How do you know whether the tank, boiler, or furnace is in good shape?
Those are normal questions.
At Williams Energy, we work with homeowners every day who are getting used to oil-heated homes, sometimes for the first time. We know the system can feel unfamiliar at first. But once someone takes a little time to explain the basics, oil heat becomes much easier to understand.
Williams Energy has been family-owned on the South Shore since 1919. For generations, local families have counted on us for heating oil delivery, heating and cooling service, plumbing, electrical work, equipment installation, and emergency support when something cannot wait.
We hope the practical information included here will help you feel a bit more comfortable with your heating oil system. There's nothing overly technical or complicated. Just useful things homeowners often wish they had known sooner.
For now, the main thing is this:
You do not need to know everything today. You only need to know that you have people you can call when you have a question.
Warmly,
The Williams Family

Useful things homeowners often wish they had known sooner.
Reading the Tank Gauge
One of the simplest things you can learn is where the tank gauge is. It usually reads in fractions, not exact gallons.
If the gauge seems stuck, unclear, or different from what you expected, it is worth asking.
Automatic vs. Will-Call
Automatic: We track usage and weather to schedule deliveries. Will-call: You watch the gauge and call when ready.
Automatic delivery works best when your provider knows about major changes in household usage.
Cleaner Heating Oil
Modern heating oil has changed. We deliver premium ultra-low-sulfur heating oil and Bioheat, which burns cleaner than older formulas.
Bioheat can go into the same tank and run through the same oil heating equipment in many homes.
Payment Options
Heating bills are easier when they don't surprise you. We offer a 10-month Budget Plan, AutoPay, and online account access.
How you pay and how you receive oil are separate decisions. The right combo makes it easy.
Oil Tank Awareness
Watch for blistering paint, rust, dents, or an oil smell. A tired tank is much easier to deal with before it fails.
Oil tank corrosion can work from the inside out, so the outside may look fine until a problem starts.
Cold-Weather Confidence
Cold weather asks more of the system. You may notice the tank level moving faster. This is normal.
During cold weather, oil use can change quickly. If you are on will-call, check earlier than usual.
Service & Maintenance
If it keeps you warm, it deserves a checkup. Our service plans cover heating, cooling, and hot water equipment.
A regular tune-up can catch small problems before they become breakdowns.
Tank Replacement
Older steel tanks don't last forever. We install modern Roth double-wall tanks for long-term peace of mind.
A tank job is about sizing, placement, code, delivery access, and long-term peace of mind.
Whole-Home Support
We provide heating oil, propane, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and generators. One local company for everything.
In many homes, comfort problems involve equipment, hot water, plumbing, or electrical, not just fuel.
Inside Your Boiler Room
Most homeowners rarely look at their boiler until something goes wrong. Understanding these key parts can help you feel more confident about how your home stays warm.
The Oil Burner
This is where the magic happens. It mixes heating oil with air and ignites it to create the flame that heats your home's water.
Pressure & Temp Gauge
Think of this as your boiler's dashboard. It tells you the current temperature and pressure of the water inside the system.
Expansion Tank
As water heats up, it expands. This tank provides a safe place for that extra volume to go, protecting your pipes from too much pressure.
Circulator Pump
This is the engine that pushes the hot water out of the boiler and through the radiators or baseboards in your rooms.
Emergency Switch
Usually a red switch located at the top of the basement stairs or near the unit. It cuts power to the burner instantly if needed.
Flue Pipe
The "chimney" for your boiler. It safely carries exhaust gases out of your home. It's important to keep this area clear.

Seasonal Fuel Estimator
Get a rough idea of how much heating oil you might use this winter based on your home's size and your habits.
Adjust your home size, thermostat setting, and insulation quality to estimate your seasonal heating oil usage. This is a rough estimate for a typical New England winter. Actual usage depends on weather severity, boiler efficiency, and hot water usage.
Bioheat Impact Calculator
Williams Energy delivers Bioheat® fuel, a cleaner-burning blend that works with your existing heating system. See how switching to a B20 blend can reduce your carbon footprint and improve efficiency.
Bioheat works seamlessly in your current oil tank and boiler. You get a cleaner burn and lower emissions without the cost of a system conversion. A B20 blend can reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 16% and improve efficiency by about 3%, meaning less soot buildup and fewer service calls.
Keep Your System Running Strong
Oil heating systems perform best when they receive an annual tune-up. Regular maintenance improves efficiency, prevents unexpected breakdowns, and extends the life of your equipment.
- ✓ Clean and adjust burner components
- ✓ Replace fuel filter and nozzle
- ✓ Test safety controls and efficiency
- ✓ Inspect tank and fuel lines

Common Homeowner Questions
Getting used to an oil-heated home? Here are a few things people often ask us during their first year.
How often does the oil tank need to be filled?
It depends on the size of your home, how well it's insulated, and the weather. During peak winter months, an average home might need a fill every 3 to 4 weeks. If you're on automatic delivery, we track your usage and the weather to deliver before you get low. If you're on will-call, you'll need to monitor your gauge and call us when it reaches about a quarter full.
What does the gauge mean and should I be watching it?
The gauge on your tank shows how full it is, usually in fractions (like 1/4, 1/2, 3/4). If you are on our automatic delivery plan, you don't need to watch it—we'll take care of it. If you prefer to manage your own deliveries (will-call), you should check it regularly and call us when it gets down to 1/4.
What happens if the tank gets low?
If the tank gets too low, your heating system may pull in sludge from the bottom of the tank, which can clog the filter or nozzle and cause the system to shut down. If it runs completely dry, you'll lose heat and the system will need to be professionally primed and restarted. That's why we recommend automatic delivery for peace of mind.
Who do I call if the heat stops working?
Call us right away. Williams Energy provides 24/7 emergency service for our customers. We know that a no-heat situation can be stressful, especially in the middle of winter, so we always have technicians on call to get your system up and running again.
How do I know if my tank, boiler, or furnace is in good shape?
The best way to know is through a professional inspection and annual maintenance. We check for signs of wear, test efficiency, and ensure everything is operating safely. For oil tanks, we look for signs of rust, weeping, or leg instability. Regular tune-ups can catch small issues before they become big problems.
